LSD Options
im looking at LSDs for my 86 turbo. wondering what you guys think of the options -
1. used factory LSD transmission or diff alone. (between 400-1200 bucks) 2. Quaff LSD (1200 bucks?) 3. Gaurds LSD (????) |

1) Used LSD's will likely have the friction plates worn, and you will have to pay ~1000 to get it all sorted. Turbo S plates are the only ones available any more.
2) Torque biased LSD. It acts like an open diff if one of the rear wheels goes off the ground. Also cannot get it with different locking during deceleration and acceleration. Many like this one for AX. Nothing to wear out. 3) The best if you are tracking the car. You can get them with different lockup ratios for accell/decel so that you can go deeper into corners. Bad news is that parts will wear. Cheers, Keith

What are you using the car for? As Keith says above, this will affect your choices. I also agree that if you find a stock LSD you will have to rebuild it and in the end it's just a 40% lockup which will cost more than a new Guards or better.
I've just put a KAAZ into a 968 box and while I haven't actually used it yet, it came with good recommendations from Roger at California Motorsports. Not too expensive either. Think it was somewhere in the $1600 region. Best to contact him. Many different ways to adjust these 6 plate LSDs. Tell him Patrick from Australia sent you..hehe. Guards is going to be expensive. For your usage I would go with the TB LSD. The Quaiffe is going to be less expensive than the clutch type.
If you want prices, call them!

MSRP for LSD is $2495
MSRP for TBD is $1695 Cost to rebuild a factory ZF LSD is not as expensive as suggested above. It's usually $600-700. However that's a 2 clutch LSD and not a 4 clutch LSD like ours. Regards, Matt

Has anyone looked at a Wavetrac?
![]() WavetracŪ Differential - A torque biasing differential with a difference After looking at their applications list I found this under Porsche: WavetracŪ Differential - Application List 944 incl turbo 1986, 40.309.170WK, $1,295.00 Note: "944 turbo and turbo S models with OEM LSD and trans oil cooler option must convert to open-diff style drive gear, part number 016.155.165A and rollpin N.100.792.01" Has anyone tried one in a 951? Mine is an open diff with a OEM trans oil cooler.

Have you heard of OS Giken? The 944 option is not on their website but a rep was telling everybody in 944 forums that they started to make it this year. He might be in the rennlist forum or just reach them from their website. I don't have one, I'm just throwing it out there for your options. Good luck!

How long between rebuilds can a factory LSD (Non-S) go?
I know YMMV, but on average... 60K, 120K? 30K?
