another v8
I know this topic must fly around a lot, i am just looking for some articals and project builds.
I am a young us army solider and i got stationed in germany for my first station. I am tired of spending my money on dumb thing such as drinking and parting (19years old). I found a 944 sitting around the base. Trying to track the guy down. If i can pick it up cheap i am going to buy it. I found out today while at the local garage check on my gti i found out it has something wrong with the motor. No interior, thats all the guy knows about it. My idea is to buy a chevy 350 from back home, running around 300-400$ running. I want a none efi so i dont need to have a complicated electricalharness. Ship it here for 500$ and start collecting parts to do a turbo rebuild. I never done a rebuild, iv owned my share of cars and had a constant project all through highschool. I am just sick and tired of my front wheel drive nightmare. 3000$ for a blown head. And its just not what i like... I have thought about this a lot. Couple years back did some reasearch i just forgotten the kits for 944 to chevy. I understand the brakes will be bad. I dont know what i want to do about power steering or not, i wana try and keep a/c maybe a better a/c system. The only thing i realky concerned about is a carb in a place that has different elevation. Like if i want to go to a trake and its tuned at 1100feet above sea level and the tracks at 1700 how much of a difference will that do or if i just deside i want to cruze to france or something? I dont know much about carb and adjustments for elevation my chevy friend said go injected. i can get chey tahoe 5.3l for like 600. possile to use? |

DITCH the idea of v8 or turbo converion of an n/A.
Let me first state that I didn't even read the post. I don't thi8nk I have to, to offer some advise on these (as well as turbo) conversions. Don't even bother to waste your time on them, as they are far more hassle-ridden than that you could possibly imagine. And the results that I have seen are far below expectations. The best route to go is to get a car that is already a turbo, and start from there. I haven't seen many, but from my perspective, the overwhelmingly best way to turn an N/A into a rocket, is to go the centrifigal supercharger route, along with what is required to support it.
Anything other than that on an N/A, and it simply isn't worth the time, effort, or money, because you will NEVER see the kind of results that you were hoping for. Don't kid yourself, or get sucked in. If you're hoping to get on par with the performance of a modified turbo car, you are definitely setting yourself up for the big letdown. The only thing that could possibly take an N/A into the realm of a modified turbo car is an inter-cooled supercharger. From what I have heard, a V8 conversion will amount nothing more than an exersize in futility. That is, unless the V8 that you are putting in is one of those NEW LA1 (or whatever the correct designation is) GM v8's with twin turbos and 750HP. But I think that making one of those fit into a 944 would be far more than your average modifier would be up for. And obviously, that won't come cheap. So like has been said so many times before, you need to start with a turbo car, and go from there, if insane power is what you seek! But if anyone HAS gone the intercooled SC route on an N/A, I would LOVE to see and hear about what you have, and what you claim it will do! |

^^^ dunno what that one is about.
v8 mod is supposed to be fairly common. i'd get a EFI one though (probably LS1 or 3), fuel injection is miles better then carbs in any application. |

Just saying that there IS a better way to get big power than a V8 transplant. But if the "mighty" v8 is what you salivate after, to each his own.

Everyone has an opinion. I have yet to speak with anyone who has one that is disappointed with their LS conversion. Wild Man is correct, the only reason to do one is because you just want to. Mine should be on the ground this weekend.

I love my LS1 911, but if you're trying to stay on a budget and are thinking that you can just weld in some motor mounts and hook up a choke cable you are gonna be disapointed for sure. Thanks for your service btw as well! Although I'm starting to wonder why we need to send you guys all over the world...I guess that's another topic all together. If you're thinking of tracking this car you'll have a ton of other things to worry about besides jetting, like suspension, roll cage, harnesses tires, brakes. Your GTI would probably be a blast on the track as well anyway. I took my 951 to a track years ago and after one trip and a exploded clutch disc I built a 84' GTI with a 2.0l jetta GLI motor and trans. I could beat that car all day long, running all over my friend's BMW's, integraR's, S2000's and then drive in 75 miles home! that car was so much fun! and cheap. Even if you could get a engine for $600, you'll still spend 5k before it'll move under it's own power. Maybe you should post more about the condition of the car but you'd be better off to start with something different like wild man says. Good luck! be safe.
