Control arm question...

Hi all,

I am relatively new in the 944 ownership experience and had a DIY question for the experts.

Looking over the suspension on my 87, 951, I noticed that both the front and rear bushings (caster blocks) in the front need replacing.

At prices of around $100 per piece for both the caster blocks, as well as the eccentric bolts that are recommended to be replaced, I am looking at close to $500 to change these bushings.

I came across this steel control arm kit from 944online but it says it can only be used for upto 86 cars. What are my options to rebuild the arms in the front or switch to steels?

Let me say first, I'm no expert!

But I recommend switching to steel. Especially if you want to track your car.

Blaszak-Precision makes a great product. Their site: index

They offer two types. Tubular arms and early 'style' steel arms.

The late-offset ('87 and newer) early-style arms are hard to find on the site, so give them a call. A great guy to work with. The welds are also x-rayed before shipment.

Thank you for the tips FT.

It sounds like, while there are "rebuild kits" for late offset, Aluminum control arms out there, many people don't recommend doing that.

I do plan to track the car on a few DE days but I definitely don't want to make this a track-only car. I will give the Blaszak-Precision guys a call to find out what their pricing is like.

With the ball joint still OK on my car, I have to decide whether to just replace the bushings and move on or to replace both c. arms now and forget about them. This would be an easy decision if prices didn't start at $1000+ for 2 new c.arms.
