RPM Request
I would appreciate it if a few people would respond with their tire size and rpms at 60, 65 and 70 mph in top gear. Please also let me know what year your car is as well. Thanks!

For stock tires, the owner's manual has gearing charts in the back, showing RPM and respective speed in a given gear.
Take care! |

I don't have the manual or I would look but I will see if there is one to view online. I should have also posted why I'm asking for the info. I owned an '83 944 for many years and it remains to this day the single best vehicleI have ever owned. The time has come for me to get another. My only gripe is that I wanted to add more power to it. My intent is to get another 944 and if the hp bugs bites me again I will look seriously into the GM supercharged 3800 V-6 route. With that in mind I want to use the model with the lowest rpm at cruising speed which down here in GA is 65-70 mph. With only 4.3 qts of oil in the V-6 I don't think high rpms will be kind over the long haul. So that's the reason for my question.
Thanks all, Ron Brooks |

I believe the tall fifth gear in the 1987 and earlier 944 NA (non-turbo, non-S) is effectively slightly taller than the Turbo's. They shortened it for '88, IIRC.
If you put in a supercharged V6 - depending on the torque it creates - you may need to put in a 968 transmission anyway. The NA transmission surely won't take the power. A 944 Turbo S or 968 6-speed I would guess would be the only two transmissions capable of the torque from a supercharged V6. You could of course build a custom geared transmission, which would end up costing a small fortune though. The 968 box, being a six speed, should have a pretty tall sixth gear. Take care! |
