Question 1986 951 speedometer and odometer stopped working at same time

Searched and did not find a thread concerning both speedometer and odometer stop working at the same time.

Three years ago the odometer gear was replaced when the odometer stopped working. Now the speedometer and the odometer stopped working at the same time. The fuse(s) are not blown. The sending unit from the trans was replaced with a working one and the speedometer and odometer still did not work. All other gages in the cluster work fine.

Any ideas on what causes both to fail at same time? When the odometer stopped working three yrs ago the speedometer worked fine.

Thks

Look for a broken wire between the sensor and the instrument.

There are a number of contacts inside. Anything that stops the speedometer will stop the odometer

If I remember correctly there is a plastic gear that breaks inside that will do this. I know it affects the odometer but it might also affect the speedometer. Do a,search for it and you may find some additional info.

I had a similar issue; first the speedo and shortly after the odometer quit.

I put a new gear in, including a new sender to no avail - The speedometer needed to be repaired.

Before replacing the sender a fellow Pelican told me to check it out by first removing the 'puck' from the transmission and then run a magnet over the tranny side of the puck.

IF OK the speedo will move a bit. Mine didn't so I purchased a new one. (You need another person to watch the speedo for you)

Before installing the new one I did the magnet check on it and the needle moved so I installed it.

After having the speedo repaired in June all was well... that was until last weekend. It now will only read to 80km max (50 mph)

I contacted the shop that repaired it initially and without hesitation he told me that he would remedy what ever it is that has failed for no charge... Pelican use him - Paul's Speedometer Service in Redondo Beach CA.

As you may already know- North Hollywood Speedometre also has a very good reputation. - Either one will cost you between $125. - $150. plus tax and shipping to have yours repaired

BTW, I also at the time did as was suggested which was a complete speedometer electrical wiring check before replacing anything- No issues.

I hope the info helps you resolve your problem.

Mine does it intermittantly. I just tap on the guages and they start working.
You can also remove unit and reseat the wires and it may fix it.

Thumbs up Zepco in Richardson TX did the fix

Zepco Sales & Service

Site looks like they do everything else besides Speedo and cluster repairs but they fixed mine in less than 24hrs. (couple burned out parts). Excellent service and friendly helpful employees. Since I was local I just dropped it off and picked it up the next day. Saw a bunch of instrument clusters in there shop wrk room.
