Head Gasket

What is the difference between the Porsche 951 stock head gasket, the wide-fire, the Cosmetic and a full copper head gaskets? I will be using one of these on a stock 2.5 turbo engine with 19 psi boost.

Wide fire has a wider fire ring meant to be used with an o-ringed head or block. Most will say not worthwhile to run without.

Cometic is a multi-layered steel gasket. Much more durable than the factory and wide fire gasket. The only issue with these is they can give some trouble with sealing correctly (external coolant leaks being the biggest issue). Sealing surface prep is critical. Personally i would not advise this unless the head at a minimum has been decked. Block and head would be better.

Full copper is even more durable than Cometic.

Something to consider, its less than ideal but a headgasket can be looked at like a fuse for poor tuning, running issues and over boosting. Both a stock and widefire gasket will likely blow before causing any damage to the block. A Cometic will take a beating and may eventually blow.. a full copper gasket will likely destroy the block (cracked cylinder) before it blows.

Unless your head is o-ringed, go with stock.

The widefire is meant for sealing with the o-ring - it is not as good as the stock headgasket if you are just putting stock parts back together.

The o-ring is little more than a piece of stainless wire. The cylinder head or block (not both) must be machined with a receiver groove.

This is an o-ringed head

Thumbs up Cometic MLS is an excellent solution over OEM.

"Techno Duck is on point"

Milling and squaring is really needed with Aluminum Alloy heads once removed.
Scotch brite brown engine block mating surface and use acetone to wipe to dry ( pre-installation).
I went with Cometic MLS 0.43 and Permatex Copper Seal spray.
Used a Craftsman digital torque wrench and followed OEM Torque procedures. ***Works best***.
Turbo 8v and NA 16v heads see similar temps.... Hope this helps a bit.

Later...

My japanese import 1990 turbo came with a wide fire gasket. I'm pretty sure it had never been opened before I pulled the head.
