'enhanced' air intake?

tried searching but not finding much with the search strings I have tried.

just curious who has made modified air intakes for their 951s.

what I am considering is putting a 924GT scoop, or something similar, on the front driver's side corner of the hood that ducts air into that corner of the engine bay. or maybe NACA duct.

maybe box in the area below in the engine bay a bit so intake air will be mainly to the air intake, and will modify (cut up) the top of the air cleaner box to allow more flow to the air filter. but then excess air would flow down past the turbo.

I have seen pics of track oriented 951s with all kinds of scoops and louvers. this car is a DE/street so I am not trying to get too radical. engine mods should put it in the 300hp range.

since the paint is not good on the hood, planning to have it wrapped in a carbon fibre look so open to cutting a hole.

here is a poor attempt to represent using the 924GT scoop. the pic of engine bay is to show the area over which I am thinking of making the air inlet.

considered the Lindsey Racing vented headlight cover, not sure it will generate the amount of incoming air as I want to be effective.

interested in ideas, pic, or links.

PS. planning to also install the Lindsey Racing stage V header panel for augmenting the intercooler flow.

Nope. Well there's a lot more to it than that but that will only create a high pressure area and go nowhere or try to escape under the car, increasing lift. Same for the header panel...Unless you ventilate the hood. The factory would have done it most likely if they saw fit. If you bring any more air into the engine bay it doesn't generally do what you're intending. Better to increase your exit rather than entry pressure.

951s love to breathe - on the exhaust side. if nothing else, make sure your exhaust is 3" min. or up. more intake charge won't make any difference if you don't have everything else - turbo, injectors, FPR, exhaust, etc. - in place to use it. even consider a MAF system instead of the time/effort/money you would put into this induction set up. the intercooler is already taking care of the charge temp.

Yes, I'd agree although I think 3" is fine for 90% of applications. But getting rid of the stock exhaust is a big plus. It's heavy and often really small inside just after the downpipe as it's twin layered and often collapsed.

thanks for input. my question shows how much I still need to learn about 951s.

I did install a 3" LR full exhaust. chipped, LR dual port WG and manual boost control.

from all I had read/heard, my moderate mods probably does not need the full MAF or enhanced air intake.

the enhanced intake wont do much, esp without a MAF. on the stock setup with the snorkel tube, you are already drawing nice cold air from the fender. with a MAF, maybe this might drop the intake temp a bit, but with the stock air box, i don't see it helping.

How is the sound of the LR exhaust system? Has it drone sound at any rpms and is it annoying on highway? Do you have pre-muffler or only end muffler? Have seen many youtube videos, but most are with engine running at idle and parked.

sound? as I am breaking in a partially rebuilt engine, dont know how it will sound being driven hard.

only have the rear Magnaflow muffler and no CAT. sounds good for a 4cyl turbo, not too loud from the interior. as I try to keep changing the engine speed, not sure about droning at fixed speeds.

has a open, throaty sound, way better than the fart can exhausts you hear on ricers.

but just does not compare to the sound of the headers and 3" exhaust on my 16V 928, as it goes from a growl to a howl the 928 sounds faster than it is.

Thanks. I am planning to put another Magnaflow resonator in the place of cat so hopefully it will be fine also for longer rides at fixed speeds. I am also going with 2,75 inch exhaust instead of 3 inch. Will be interesting to see what will be the end result as most of the set-ups are 3 inch with straight pipe instead of the cat.

Smudo, where does your wastegate tie back in to the exhaust? If you put the resonator where the cat used to be, won't exhaust flowing through the wastegate bypass the resonator?

My car came with a 3" exhaust from the PO and the wastegate dump pipe runs about 2/3 rds of the length of the exhaust before mating up.

I'm looking to do something like that on my 951 as well, especially since my air filter is located in a very restrictive space between the driver-side headlight and the coolant reservoir.

Cutting a hole in your desired spot on the hood and covering it up with a stick-on hood scoop can achieve the look provided in your photos. It looks cheap unless you paint the scoop to match your car, but at least it would work If you're willing to spend a little more money, you can get a headlight panel with a scoop prefabricated onto it, but that only works with the headlights off unless you rig the driver-side headlight to never flip up again

I was planning to tie it back just before the resonator. I know that for maximum performance it should be dumped in to the atmosphere (or to have parallel exhaust for wastegate gases), but the car is mainly street driven.

From the mock-up photos, it may be best to put the scoop directly over the air-box. Then make an adapter piece that connects and seals the lower air-box to the bottom of the scoop.

Pressurized intake and cold-air won't really make much of a difference on the intake. Since most of the intake-restriction is due to the AFM's flapper-door. Removing the AFM alone is worth 35-40bhp. Most bang-for-the effort compared to intake-plumbing or cold-air gimmicks, which may be 1-2bhp at best.

What most people don't realize is that the temperature in the engine-compartment is the same as outside ambient air once you're above 10-15mph. It's only when you're in stop-and-go traffic that the lack of turbulence and air-circulation causes a problem with ingesting heated air.

BTW, is that some kind of Honda in the background?

yes. 1983 Honda CB1100F. single year bike, first 4 cyl 1100, 83 was the last year for that generation.

it is for sale. and I need to get it listed.

had bikes off and on my whole life. but have totally lost interest. any more when I take a ride, which has become rare, just cant get the idea of laying in a hospital bed in a body cast out of my mind.

got this about 6 yrs ago, in running but rough shape. the motor is very good so did not need to open up, other than re-shim the valves. but dismantled to the frame and refreshed everything. don't really consider a 'full restoration', but bike is totally refreshed, runs like a scalded dog, and needs nothing but a new owner.

should have commented. after these replies and talking to other 951 guys, have backed off the idea shown in this post.

if anything, may louver the hood to get hot air out at high track speeds, but no plan yet.

I may install a Lindsey Racing ducted headlight cover, but nothing more. but do plan for a LR ducted header pannel to feed air to the intercooler. hear the intercooler can get a bit heat soaked on the track.
