Engine front seals questions
Hi, I'm in the middle of doing the engine front seals on my 86 turbo (upper and lower balance shafts seals and camshaft seals) and I was wondering why all the write-ups tell to install the balance shaft covers back on the engine and than put the orange seals next ? Is there something wrong with putting the orange seals and sleeves on the covers before intalling them on the block ?
Also do you guys recommend cleaning the new sleeves with brake cleaner to remove the anti-corrosion product or just soak them in oil before installing them ? Thank you ! |

Hi... I think u may bend the ID Seal that goes over the BS shafts if u install them with the BS covers off and then u my also scratch and damage the seal also with the cover off when u install them. I have alway installed the seals with the end covers on and never had one leak todate... "Knock on Wood"... just my opinion.

Can you add a thin coat of oil on the OD seal to help inserting them or it must be dry ?
thank you |

Hi Bob...(hummmmmm...)
Just a side note... I always use just a smidgen of Vaseline (very small amount) and coat the aluminum and seal outer ring with it... slides right in with out coating the seals wit oil (you don't need to soak them in oil). A little trick I learned a long time ago was to put the seals in the fridge for about an hour before installing... they almost slide right in with out having to "BEAT" them in... and run the chance of deforming the seals. PS: Bob... I sent u a PM about a month ago and not have heard back yet... I lost your phone number when my phone died and need to talk to u... please call me at... 859-653-8477... FT. Thomas, KY... Ron. +PS: I love the build post that you did on your 951!

Yeah I forgot about the freezer trick, I do it with bearings and bushings. |

PS... I would not put the rubber seals in the freezer... only in the "MILK"... section... if u put them in the freezer they will become to brittle and may... "CRACK"!

Hi again... Do not clean it off... Porsche has put in on for a good reason... H2O get's into every thing!
It's called Heat and Cool down cycle's... "HOT to Cold", that suck up the moisture! Water (HUMIDITY)... is an engine's worst enemy when it comes to degrading of seals & all rubber components on any older Porsche... including... "TIME" = "DRY ROT - Derogation!!! Have u ever tried to replace the 2 1/2 foot long rubber fuel return line - (Porsche has discontinued this OEM part and no one makes them any more) - that connects to the return line at the top of fuel tank with out dropping the fuel tank down... I found a way way to do it... and had to ck 4 Porsche 944's before I found a good stock one with low miles that had been always stored in a climate controlled garage... in under 1 HR... instead of 1 day! Most people just take a rubber fuel line (W/O the Metal fitting's)... they cut it off at the return hard line end & hose end...and then use hose clamps to hold both ends. ? = How man times have u seen a Porsche 944, 951, or any older Porsche burn almost to the ground! Thanks...for the question... Ron Ron...

Yeah I left the two balance shaft sleeves alone just coated them in oil a little. But the camshaft sleeve came with some kind of dried oil on it. I had no choice to clean it with brake cleaner, it wouldnt even have slide onto the camshaft.

got my seals off yesterday. both balance races have shiny marks but no grove I can see or feel with my fingernail. but the crank oil pump gear has a slight grove and will need to be replaced.
and after so much dismantling, got to finally install a new part. and got the balance shaft housings cleaned and ready for the new seals. ![]() ![]()
