The K&N air filter does not fit porsche 993

Ordered K&N air filter Part #: PEL-KN-33-2731 and tried to install it in my 1996 993 C2. Turned out that the K&N rubber collar around the air filter is too thick and the air box cover will not close. Also the air filter cover back pegs would not fit without substantial push from the right. The stock paper filter collar is much thinner and allows it to bend between the box and the cover. K&N rubber is too hard. Any ideas?

My idea is don’t use the K&N regardless. They require more frequent maintenance than the factory paper filter and they are detrimental to “hot wire” AFM’s, which I think the 993 has. Not sure about the latter.

In any case I would avoid the K&N; they offer no advantage over the stock filter.

They do have a good ad campaign.

My thinking was more pragmatic - cost. K&N costs 3 times the paper filter so after 3 cleanings you get free air filters. Now this exercise made me apply some critical thinking and check the claim that K&N provide no performance benefits. Recently I discovered youtube channel called Engineering Explained and one post compares K&N to stock filters by taking old Subaru on the dyno. It shows over 3% horse power difference - https://youtu.be/GS69owXpGdY?si=nYw9dcNgicC89X6p . Weather this will burn out the MAF in 993 is a separate question. Anyway I am saved from K&N by a simple fact - it does not fit the 993 air filter box.

In certain vehicles I could see where the K&N would be advantageous but Porsche wouldn’t leave easy power gains on the table and an air filter would fall into that category. It’s also why aftermarket exhausts don’t provide significant if any power increases unless you remove the catalytic.
