Anyone clean the 993 secondary air ports?

Wondered if anyone out there has tackled the PIA project of cleaning the clogged SAI ports. No need to pull the engine and heads if 'ya don't burn oil at an undue rate.

I've heard of folks that have pulled the intake and exhaust, poured carbon cleaner down the SAI ports and cleaned out with pipecleaners or wires.

Anybody actually done this that might offer tips and/or shortcuts?

I've seen testimonials at www.rennlist.com that this has actually worked. Need to find a mechanic that can do it though. Check out the 993 section of Rennlist and do a search for carbon buildup topics. This was discussed pretty recently.

i plan on doing this as a preventative measure this winter.
after looking at the PET, i see just one pipe leading to each bank of cylinders from the top; therefore, each individual port would have to be accessed from below- in each exhaust port.
i talked to one shop/carlot that just did a soak. 10 days to get all passages flowing on a clogged system. (they didn't divulge too much detail, or let me know what cleaning fluid they used)
how "open" the soak method leaves the passages is what i wonder. physically cleaning them along with a cleaning solution would probably be better. the shop was probably just doing this to get the CEL light to go off on the cars they were selling on their lot.

Bill,

Actually, many of the posts on the Rennlist references you note were mine (I use ecobb993 there too). I'm hoping maybe there was someone on this forum that hasn't (for some reason) visited Rennlist (which is the best for Porsche folks, as far as I can tell).

maxnine,

Follow Bill's links to read what we Rennlister's have found out so far. Sure would like to find out how your project goes. I've got to tackle it myself someday (when I finally get sick of resetting the CEL).

I can't imagine getting pipecleaners up in there behind the valve. If I had to do it I'd probably pull the motor apart and do the whole top end, and fit 3.8 barrels "while I'm in there".
