993 Brakes question...........help!
Hey guys!
I'm not sure If I have a problem with my brakes on a '96 993...........you'd think I'd know eh? My car has been parked up (outside in some of Englands finest weather) for the last week or so and when I took it out a few days ago the steering wheel was juddering under braking - but only at certain speeds!?! This went on for 2 days and so I knew I had to get them checked out, but, I took the car out last night and there was no problem - or there seemed to be no problem. The discs and pads were changed about 7K ago when I bought the car - surely they should last a little longer than this - or am I being totally naive? I'm just wondering if on a 993 C2S Tiptronic if the brakes get a harder life as you tend not to use as much engine braking as you would with a manual box. What d'ya think? |

i can't imagine the pads and rotors being shot with 7k miles!! unless you were seriously tracking the car.
is it because the rotors rusted badly, but did not rust where the pad and caliper protected it from the weather?? leaving a uneven surface.

I would suspect rust on the rotors 1st as the car was outside in Englands finest weather ie wet.

I agree with the others, it is either rust or pad material stuck to the rotors. The rust/pad material wore off after use. If it happens again, just go out on some deserted road and do some hard braking exercises.

Cheers fellas - Now you've said it it makes total sense!
I took the car out last night again and It was fine. The next time the rotors look a little grubby I'll put the car forward a foot or so and have a look if it happens again! Happy driving!

When I wash my car (and I live in Phoenix) after being parked overnight I have to gun it to get the pads to break loose when I back the car out of the garage. It is definitely because of the surface rust on the rotors. It took me a while to figure it out though.

If you can, always take the car for a drive after washing it. This will get most of the moisture out. There are lots of little spaces that are potential trouble spots when standing water if left in place.
