General 964 Maintenance Q - Warning...Newbie

So I am thinking a lot about buying my first porsche. I am considering the 964 C2. I ordered a buyers guide from Amazon (has not yet arrived) and have been reading everything i can find on the internet. I am familiar with the major porblems such as the pre 91 gasketless oil leeks, the issues with the DMF change, the distributor thingy (the inexpensive fix), and the steering rack.

I expect annual maintenance to be more than my mid 90's MB C class, but any idea on how it might compare?

I am curious to know what the annual running cost of a 964 might be. On the www. porsche964.co.uk site i found the following maintenance log for a 91 c2. Is this representative of what one might reasonably expect for maintenance costs? Seems VERY high. THanks in advance.

jg

Grand Total = 49,251.27
Summary by year, lowest to highest:
1993 = $841.83 (major service)

1997 = 1,894.87 (distributor repair, HVAC repair, wheel, windshield)

1995 = $2,124.47 (brakes, install LUK, major service)

2003 = $2,150.03 (new tail-light, center reflector, brakes, fuel pump, install rack)

1998 = $2,557.39 (brakes, major service, recover targa top)

1996 = $3,516 (brakes, major service, new clutch)

2002 = $4,120.82 (install new rack, shocks, ball joints, tie-rods, convert to R-134A)

2001 = $4,621.56 (replace CV boots, repair oil line, reprogram ECU, repair CC, new clutch, replace all fluids, new CCU)

1994 = $4,677.49 (recover targa top, major service, RS flywheel, PS leak)

1999 = $15,350.43 (new clock, recover targa top, new engine/trans install)

2000 = 7,337.87 (starter, complete & sort install, oil & brakes)

That seems rather high for what they list.

Then again, if it was serviced at the dealer, that would explain it.

Wonder whay it needed a new ening in 1999

In the 8+ yrs and 140,000 miles I've had my 90C4, I've spent about $10k on parts and $8k on labor. Regular maintenance can be pretty cheap if you DIY (12 qts of mobil1, a filter, spark plugs and an afternoon). The biggest bill I had was to replace the oil lines and reseal everything that could be done without and engine drop ($3800). I really pays to get the factory repair manual and some other books like for bosch DMEs and ABS.

Porsche Crest

Hey Don: I have a 91 C2 also. I plan on selling it next month. It has tiptronic and less than 35k on the clock. What should I price it at in So. Cal. area?

I have had my '91 964 for over a year now and all i had to do was an oil change, which I did myself it was very easy.

I bought a car that was very well kept, low mileage, never seen rain and all service and upgrades (clutch, vented dist. and etc.) done

Just make sure you buy one with all work already done this way you can enjoy it for a few years without spending too much money, and have a proper PPI done.

Thanks. Since posting this back in mid December i looked at several and ended up buying a 91 C2 Targa with 80k on the clock. Well taken care of with all the right work done.

We were expecting rain today so i left it home.... all i see out my window right now is sun, and lots of it. =(

Fwiw, I had a '93 C2 for 60k+ miles and 4 years of daily driving and I spent $35 in unscheduled maintenance. The thing was bullet proof.
