Power Steering going out

The power steering in my '90 C2 is going or is gone.

I noticed it the other day pulling out of work. The steering was very heavy in the parking lot, but seemed to work when the engine was reved. Now it is just gone all the time.

My initial thought was the belt was loose, but after looking in a couple of manuals, the blt looks like it has teeth, and thus would not slip. Is this correct?

Anyway, I checked the fluid, it is fine.

I'm assuming this could be a really expensive fix, either R&R the pump and/or the steering rack.

Any advise or experiences?

Its possible the belt has been shredded and not powering the pump. I think you can tell if the pump is running by having the car at idle and taking a look in the reservior to see if the fluid is circulating. I am willing to bet that your belt is gone. Not a big deal to fix but you will have to take some sheet metal and various bits off the car to get access.

Cheers,

Mike
