Question air conditioning help needed - evaporator?

I have an AC leak. Its so bad that after recharging I believe I can smell the freon. I suspected thar the problem is near the area that blows air into the cabin of the car. During the latest recharge, I bought one of those products that claims to seal metal leaks. After adding this to the system, the ac began to leak an oily substance from near the front of the car. I crawled under and found that the oil leak originates from a vent on the bottomside front half of the car. Closer inspection revealed that this vent is actually fed by 2 tubes. One tube is white and is crimped together at the bottom, the other is a black plastic tube. The A/C oil is originating from the crimped tube. I followed the tube up and it seems to go to the evaporator area? (Its basically between the 2 pollen filters under the hood) I removed the plastic cover to expose this area and found more wet oily residue.

Can vou tell me if it sounds like Im chasing down the problem? If so, how do I remove the evaporator? Do I have to remove the dash etc to get this out or can I get it from the hood? Any help is appreciated!

I'm assuming that you have a 964 or a 993.

You have a bad evaporator core and it must be replaced.

Unfortunately, this is not a simple do-it-yourself job. The fuel tank, and front firewall need to be removed.

Since you have added sealant, do notify the shop that will be doing the work. The entire system will have to be flushed out.

Thanks for the information. I removed the plastic cowl cover and see oily residue near the expansion valve. I read on rennlist with someone with a 993 that just replaced the o-ring in this area. Wishful thinking? I dont know.

Im wondering if anyone was able to service the expansion vavle o-rings without removing the gas tank. Is it possible to remove the firewall without getting the tank out?

Also, does anyone have the procedure to remove the tank and firewall in case I need to remove the entire evaporator?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can replace just the expansion valve with the rest of the stuff in the car.
