Question Help sorting out 996's

Howdy - Nick here and am new to the site. Sorry to post such a vague first post but I need to start at the beginning. I wish to purchase my first Porsche, hopefully in about 1 month or less. I have budgeted around $40k for a 996. I will be driving this car daily, many happy miles; in fact it will be my only car. I am a moderate wrencher, and will not deal with dealerships - which is where the bulk of the cars for sale I have found are from. I am specifically looking for a low mileage, late(est) model, manual, coupe in black, silver or grey with black interior. I am in Los Angeles but am willing to look wherever necessary.

1. Any tips on where to look?
2. Is my budget realistic?
3. Any issues with the 996 that I should look out for? (I have read about the RMS issue but need to do more research)
4. PPI cost?
5. Options to definitely look for that I must have?

Can't think of any other questions at the moment. I appreciate any and all feedback. I will even read a post about how I should get a 993 instead! Well not really.

Thanks,

Nick

Get a 993 instead!

(seriously though, you can get a hell of a lot of 993 for $40K and an early model 996 for the same amount.... just a thought)

rennlist.com has a much larger 996 following. may want to do some research over there
