Trickle Charge Battery 964?

as I do not use the car regularly,my battery seems to drains rather quickly(probably because of the alarm )
I was thinking of installing a plug to make it easy to trickle charge the battery when the car is not in use -without disconnecting it -A friend told me I should not do this as it could damage the electric circuit and/ or alterantor
Is this true ?
Is there a maximum amperage to trickle charge ?
Peter

Trickle charge just means low amp charging (about 1 amp).

I have a basic Sears trickle charger that I use with my car. It came with both alligator clips and a harness that can be hard wired so you simply plug the charger into it (it gets wired to the battery).

Use of a trickle charger without disconnecting the battery will not cause any problems for the car or battery.

I used the Sears trickle charger over a long time, about one year, and a lot of water evaporated and one cell stopped working. Bought a new battery. I would suggest either the Porsche approved trickle charger or a motorcylce style that checks the voltage and only applies current when necessary.

I use floats on mine. A float has a chip in it that varies the current of the charging circuit from 0 to ~3 or 4amps @ ~14v or so. You won't overcharge the battery as it shuts off when fully charged then turns on again as needed. A trickle is always on at a constant current and needs to be monitored

there are 3 basic kinds

permanent mount on the side of the battery(I have a Schumacher and will buy another)

separate that is connected by clamps to the battery post(can be a PIA) on a 911, 964 or 993 has more room( I also have one of these, the advantage is that it can also boost at 30amps)

separate that connects through the cigarette lighter(this is the way the factory ones connect)
