tire sizes on 964

........will 255/45/17 fit the back of a narrow body car, and 225/50/17 fit the front without any fender modifications???

I assume you will be putting these on Cup 2 or similar 7" and 9" wheels? Wheels matter due to offset. Camber also matters. More camber means it's more likely to fit.

They should fit fine. Be warned that a 225/50 can vary in size depending on who makes it. Check the actual dimensions from tirerack or the manufacturer's web site.

With rolled fenders, 235/275 could fit on my car when running -2 camber. While they fit, I chose to run the smaller 225/255 pilot sport cups or RA-1s.
