Help! Tie-rod issues on 964 w/ 993 GT2 Evo wheel carriers...

Hi all,

We're in the final stages of putting my project car together and have run into a bit of a problem...

We upgraded the 964 wheel carriers to the 993 GT2 Evo wheel carriers, part of which includes a tie-rod bump steer kit as an option when purchased from Smart Racing. The problem is that the track of the 964 is actually narrower than the 993, so even though I have a 993 steering rack and wheel carriers, the tie-rods are either too short or too long for this application.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any solutions or ideas that anyone might be able to throw out there? The obvious one is to cut the tie-rod to shorten it and re-weld it, but that doesn't sound like a very robust solution...

Thanks in advance!

Here's a pic of the part in question:

On my car, I believe the folks at Jerry Woods custom fabricated the tie rods. You could ask Rich to have them make the same for you (408 369-9607). I have a 964 steering rack.

964 & 993 have very similarly speced front ends, But GT2 is much wider, so parts like steering arms and sway bars are longer.

964/993 wants 993RS uprights and tie rods, GT2 did use the 993RS uprights but has it's own unique tierods.

'kurquehart' documented his install on a 964 here

I have 964 rack, Evo inner, ERP outer, and EVO upright. This combo works. AFAIK, 964/993 racks are the same size, so maybe you have the wrong tie rod from Smart Racing?

Ahhh... I'm starting to see the light, thanks guys.

I think we might have ordered the 993 GT2 Evo and (subsequently) 993 RS tie-rods, whereas I need the tie-rod that kurquhart is using. Hopefully this next set we're going to order will be the right ones...

Will report back with results once the parts come in, thanks again!

993 RS (inner+outer) tie rods should be the correct length.

The advantage of the EVO inner tie rod is monoball instead of stiff rubber. I would use the RS if the car will be driven on the street.

The advantage of the ERP outer tie rod is vertical adjustment to match the ride height. Depending on how low your car is, this may not be needed.
