Carrera Revival from storage?
I'm writing this for a friend (female) that has a '97 Carrera that has been sitting for two years. The car obviously has a dead battery...but other than that, nothing wrong. My question is, apart from changing out oil and replacing battery what needs to be done to get the car running? I have been told that it needs to be "reprogrammed"? In the manual it says that after battery replacement the car needs to run for 10 minutes to reload the blackbox with data...is there something else to this?

Redneck way change the battery see if she will start. If so let it run for 10-15min. Then change the oil and change out the brake fluid with new fuel filter. The only problem I can think of is the Gas being two years old. I would not drive till all the fluids have been change and your brakes are working.
Or drain the fuel out of the tank and fuel lines change your fuel filter drain your oil remove your oil cooler and have it flushed replace spark plugs and flush your brakes. |

Disconnect the DME relay, and crank to build oil pressure before starting.

Dad911,
the dry sump lubrication system that is in the 993 and older 911's don't need that kind of priming to build oil pressure. That's what sets the older 911's from the 996 and later cars from Porsche (exceptions the 911 Turbos, GT2 and GT3). Just drive the car after recharging the battery and drive it aggressively after proper warmup and all will be fine. |

The motor is dry, cams, bearings, etc. from sitting so long. Dry-sump or not, I still advise building oil pressure before starting.
Only takes a few minutes. Read what Grady has to say here: Spare Motor Storage...What to do (Under putting engine back in service)

For cars sitting for a long time, over 2 years, I remove the spark plugs, squirt some oil into each spark plug holes, crank munually using the crank pulley bolt two or more turns, disconnect the DME relay, remove the ratchet on the crank pulley bolt, then start the car to build up oil pressure. At least now you know the motor is free and properly oiled up rotating and reciprocating parts before firing it up.
