cabriolet top disaster (?)---HELP!!!

beautiful sunny day yesterday, and decided to put the top down on my 964. about a third of the way down i hear a loud snap, and the top stopped. upon inspection i see that the main alloy strut that appears to go from one side to the other (this part is about one inch in width, and a third of an inch in thickness) snapped in half. fortunately, no damage done to the canvas. took motor foreward, and was able to get the top to reengage at the windshield with a little assistance. aside from not being able to use the top, the only other damage seems to be that the strip with the rear vertical door glass seal is slightly bent, and the window does not seal completely. now for the questions. is this a common occurence??? what could have caused this?? what do i do now aside from getting the new parts and putting this back together??? is there something to look out for when doing this?? the top had been functioning flawlessly prior to this incident. any insight or just encouragement would be greatly appreciated. thanks--tom

Tom, Do a search here, or on the 911 boards, or on Rennlist. This is a well know problem with different fixes. Some replace, some weld. Just search and you will have lots to read. If you don't find anything try searching with some profanity. Like G%$#%$#% F%$&ing convertible top.

It is fixable. Unfortunately, it is going to hurt, particularly in the wallet.

I'm away on vacation (and out of town) this week. I can get you part numbers and the like when I get back into town

Returned from vacation.

Here are the images.

In the first image, you can see all of the pieces The piece you broke is part #1 Note it is different for left and right sides.

The next is a zoom image of the B-pilliar. Note how the replacement piece connects to part #3 These are all additional parts, as the original from the factory is riveted and bonded with a silastic compound.
