Typical 964 Engine Lifespan before Rebuild?

Hey Everyone...

Brand new to the forum, I appreciate everyone having me along. I am considering my first Porsche..looking forward to"livin the dream" sooner rather than later. But I am wondering how many miles you can typically expect out of a 964 engine under factory maintenance guidlelines. Here are the details of the car I am looking at...

Oh and a PPI is a definite

1992 964 C2
Originial Owner
Documented Maintenance
131,000 (orginal miles)
PPI friendly (if local)
Asking Price $18,500 Originally asking $22,900

I haven't seen the car in person but it looks super clean from the pics.

Also it is "Coral Red" paint as a factory option (supposedly an $8,000) option from the factory. Does anyone know anything about this color? I kind of like the way it looks....but like I said..I haven't seen it in person

Any feedback would be much appreciated

My 89 C4 has 141k miles on it and still runs strong with minimal oil consumption and leaks. It does not blow smoke at start or while running. The results on this car may not be typical of many other owners so I count my blessings so far.

My C4 had service records all the way back to the original 2k mile service and I was able to read thru the records for a while prior to purchase. What I realized was this car had the oil changed every 2000-3000 miles with quality Dino oil and all Porsche service intervals were met as prescribed.

Its not uncommon to get +200K out of those engines, usually something else wears earlier that requires some kind of overhaul like valve guides, clutch, etc... and while you're there might as well do something like a top end job...
Oil analysis can tell you a lot more on how close you're to get something done..

I've got 202k on mine. It drips oil, but has ever since I got it at 50k. Paid $30k in '96.

Until it burns a valve, starts to smoke, or the oil pressure doesn't peg the gauge anymore, I see no reason to get a rebuild.

BTW - mobil 1 every 5k might have something to do with my luck, either that or the 964 is brick sh!+house.

Arrow Mixed Oil

On a trip I needed to add oil and couldn't find Mobil 1, I added 1 qt of a non synthetic oil (10W40)

Could this cause a problem?

I am also a new forum register and my first post was yesterday about buying a 964 (964 Shopper Question).

I talked to the owner of this car when he first had it listed at $22.9K. At that time he said the price was not negotiable. I guess supply and demand has worked again. It looks very nice (from the pictures) for a car with 131k miles on it.

IIIRC, when i asked about cltch replacement, the owner said he had to replace the clutch because he got stuck in the snow when it was near new. You probably need to replace the cltch before any engine work is needed.

BTW, it is not the high milage that matters, but how the car was taken care of. The car I went to see yesterday looked like had never seen a detailer in its 109K life. Needless to say, it is off the list.

Good Luck
