Bill,
We were talking about the 964's 250 hp vs. the 285 of the 993 VR. Maybe it is the better torque of the 993, but the 964 felt geared even longer than the 993, when test driving it. George |
The '92-'94 964's are indeed geared taller than the 993.
The '90-'91 964 has a 9/31 ring and pinion. The '92-'94 have a 9/30. The 993 went back to the 9/31 R/P since they made emissions and mileage by having the tall 6th gear. All of these cars in U.S. version have the same 1st through 3rd gear ratios. So the best performing 964 would be the late-'91 that would have the plastic intake, and hopefully the updated cylinders with gaskets, and still had the shorter final drive ratio. Or buy a '92-'94, and then swap in a Euro 993 6spd. |
Having owned two 964's, a 993 (currently) and a 3.2 Carrera, My next, and probably last Porsche will be a G50 '87-89 Carrera. I don't want or need airbags. But your priorities may be different.

Seems like the consensus is that it's primarily subjective.
Drive as many different models as much as you can. "Better" is so hard to apply universally for everyone. |

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1171230453.gif The RoW C2 used the g50.03 right to the end, Us g50.05 was taller geared than other 964s, but still not as tall as a 993 in the top gear |

My 3.2 had A/C and it worked just fine.
The 993 condenser mod will take care of early 911 A/C issues. |
Yeah, that's true Bill V., but I figured we were talking about acceleration.
The 993 6 spd is the best of both worlds. Especailly the Euro box. |
Just my opinion but the US g50.20 stock gearing is awful
Here's a comparison of most of the different g50s http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1171251282.gif |

There all good.
I have never owned a 993 but have driven many. I am not a fan of the styling of the 993 although the back end grows on you over time. I hate the lack of rocker cover panels and the way the front transitions into the wheel arch and into the rear fender myself. This is all subjective and just my preference. As far as performance you are looking at 2 cars that are very similar. If you pull the body off the 993 and 964 you will see very little difference except for the multi link rear suspension which is more responsive and smoother over rough roads. Is it needed hell no. Otherwise with the money saved by buying a 964 you can upgrade it to be equal to or better than a 993 for the same money. I recently purchased a 93 964 with low mileage and it is in A1 shape. It has a complete Bilstein HD/Eibach suspension, new sachs clutch and LW flywheel, Fabspeed RS air box muffler delete Clear corners, and lots of extras. All it needs is TRG sways which are going in soon. Power and response is comparable to any 993 I have driven if not more so due to the LW FW. It sounds great is rather quick and a real bargain. I like the 993's I just don't think they are a better car just another variant Porsche made over the years. I love the classic lines of the older 911's and the 964 gives you the best of all worlds. Although if I were looking for a C4 or a targa the 993 wins hands down. Drive them and see for yourself, it really comes down to which lines you like best. |
The 964 certainly is a better bang for the buck but remember that 993s also respond nicely to modifications, including the LWF. ;)

well, having come from the ranks of owning a 'middie', but a '74 with the 7:31 rearend which is a quick off of the line bugger...my 964 C4 hauls serious ass! i've got the bypass pipe, k&n filter (just sounds throatier, plan to make holes in the original airbox and replace), eibach, lowered lowwww...wow, it's fast and stable. i'd read on rennlist that the C4 favors performance more in the 993, and weather-ability in the 964..and that the 964 C4 system is strong as hell, being the 'little brother' to the 959 system, but 10x quicker in response time with its abs sensors.
funny, they come with a green indicator, but no bulb, when they leave germany for the pdas (porsche dynamic all-wheel-drive system). i hear that the green light isn't allowed in the u.s. anyway, i pulled the gauge, installed the light and it works! every time i hit a big bump and get a wheel spin, it lights up green! indicating that some traction is lost on a wheel and being transfered to the other three. |
Buy the best car you can afford and then worry about what it is, what the mileage is, etc. The pros and cons for and against each have been covered. Keep an open mind and drive a few and one will feel right and you'll buy it. 964s are a bargain so I would get a good late one of those over a slightly dodgy 993 any day. They can also make possibly the best sound of any later air-cooled model with the right mods. ;-)
Cheers, David |
+1 david. that's what i did. spent 20k on a 964 instead of low-20's on a beater 993. i'd have needed to spend 30-35k to get what i wanted in a decent 993..just couldn't swing it.

I have owned a 68 912 coupe, 75 911S, an 83 SC sunroof coupe and have spent a lot of time in 993/996's.
I bought my 94 964 targa because it was what I wanted...it makes me happy:) |
well said, seahawk..excellent choice. ;)
|
well - i decided to buy a 95 993 cab with 67k miles, triple black. i am planning on picking it up tomorrow. PPI turned out fine.
thanks for all the input! |
