A/C and fan problem

Relative newbie. Have a 90 C2, 964. In the past 2 weeks, have been having following symptoms: fan blower (interior) set to 1, 2, 3 or 4 and everything is fine. In some cases, put on a/c. Then all of a sudden, fan stops blowing, a/c is not working. Then comes back on. This is intermittent. No specific conditions bring this on. I hear no noises (such as squeals, etc) indicative of any bearings, etc going out.

Have read the various threads and began the seek/find/eliminate problems. All the fuses work. Rechecked connection and all seem in order. Noticed a big hole in duct. Not sure what the part is called. Please see attached photo

My question is....would this gap cause my problem I am experiencing? Has anyone had to ever replace? If so, what is the part called and is it a realtive easy fix from a DIY (with help of a mechanic relative)?

Thanks in advance.

I doubt that gap would cause the problems you are experience. On the other hand, replacing that piece is an easy DIY. Basically unbolt the old piece and bolt the new one in. There is a little bit of “fitment” going on, with the parts it interlocks with, but it is simple.

Wanted to add further. The a/c, fan blow fine when car is just starting or sat over night in garage. Once on road for a while, a/c turns off and fan turns off. Some times it comes back on, other times, it will take a while or has to sit in garage.

Could it be a sensor or possibly engine heat causing something to malfunciton?
