Convertable top inoperative ?

I recenly purchased a 1996 993 Cabriolet.

When I bought it the former owner raised and lowered the top to show me that it worked.
Now that I have the car home I push the button but nothing happens ??

I tried putting the E-brake on and stepping on the brake pedal but still nothing ?
I checked the fuse and it is OK...

Is there some kind of a trick to get these tops to go up ???

I messaged the former owner but he is not responding...

seems strange that he was able to make it work...

thanks for any tips. I have no manuals for the car...

Top Inoperative

Yes, it is. I tried engine off and engine running.

I think that it may have something to do with the e-Brake handle switch ?

it won't do it with the engine running.....the book says to turn key to pos. 2 and push the button towards the back of the car....( that's obviously not verbatum) are you activating the correct button? there's a left/right switch for the mirrors......the top one is front /back....is the "top warning light" lit up?

Top switch location

There are 3 switches on the center console, right in front of the shifter.

The one in the middle looks like a switch but is actually a small red light.

The button on the left is a 2 way toggle switch and I believe that it is

the one for the top...
When I push the button nothing

happens but I do hear a very soft click behind the dashboard so I think that

the switch is sending a signal ? The red light does not light up ?

thanks for your impute... Rich CA. 94941

the switch for the top is is under the two far left gauges....kind of between them but right below them....under the small lipof the dash below the gauges....not UNDER the dash but just below the gauges......the 3 switches on the console from left to right are the hazards, door locks and the button you push to cancel the big ! in the gauge to the left of the tach

Top Switchs

I messed with a small one way toggle switch just to the left of the headlight

switch on the dash.

With the key on and engine off I used the switch on the center console in

front of the shifter

AND IT WORKED !!

My top is now up, locked and looks great...

I'm not sure if messing with that smaller switch on the dash had anything

to do with it OR If I have a bad contact at the ignition switch ?

I least I am one step closer to figuring it out...

thanks... Rich CA. 94941

If you ever encounter a spotty cab top operation situation, check into the common problem of degraded solder joint in the cab top control module. Here is some information with regard to that:
