Original equipment radio re-install
All,
I want to put the original radio back in my '91 964 C2, simply because I want to maintain the stock look of the car as much as possible. How does it snap into the dash? Is there a metal box the unit slides into like aftermarket radios have? The radio has clips on the front but I am not sure if I have what it needs to clip into still in the dash. Any help is appreciated. ~jeff

There should be 2 holes on either side of the radio. Shove nails in them releasing the radio from the mount. Pull the radio out.
Oh, and Go Bucks!

Cool, you live in Michigan and are supporting the Bucks!! My daughter lives there too, in Bath. Went to school at Michigan State.
I think you are referring to the Blaukpunt (sp), I know of the holes you are talking about. This radio is the up option with the cd and has Porsche on the face, no holes on the side. It is the one with the seperate amp under the passenger seat. I want to reinstall it but I am not sure if all the original hardware is there in the dash for it to lock in place. What do you think?

If I remember correctly, you pull the thin frame off then lift the two silver tabs on the sides.

If there is an aftermarket radio installed, there is a very good chance the original hardware to lock the oem radio in place is no longer there. When someone replaced the original radio, they most likely bent the original frame and took it out. Most aftermarket units come with a new frame the radio snaps in. You can actually buy the frame from our host:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/PartsLookup/HTML/911C2_USA_KATALOG/911-00-Frame3.htm Hope this helps. While you are at it, you might want to check the rest of the cables and the cross-over in the door. I your car has an aftermarket radio, the speakers and cross-over are most likely replaced as well.... |

I looked at the parts breakdown at the Pelican link. Thanks for sending.
Looks like that is what I was missing, the metal plate and the plastic frame. # 2 and # 6. I think I am okay with the crossover/preamp, mine is under the passenger seat. What is in the doors? What the installer did in my case was to tie in the speaker wires directly to the speaker wires that came from the preamp. They actually left the plugs in place, did not cut them off. One good thing anyway. ~jeff

Glad you found the parts. Behind the door pocket is a cross-over for the tweeter and the main speaker in the door. You just have to take off the door pocket and the cross-over is in a little hollow area between the pocket with the lit and the open pocket in the front. I was not sure if you are only replacing the radio or if you are restoring speakers to the original as well. If the car has aftermarket speakers, the original cross-over might be replaced as well. On the other hand, you might want to think about keeping aftermarket speakers because the original Porsche installed speaker are not nearly as good as the rest of the car
