92 964 Price Check

I'm looking seriously at a 1992 964 cab with 64k miles. Appears stock, has cup wheels & good rubber. The car is out of state, so I'm factfinding its condition remotely. Seller has sent lots of pics, car looks nice. So far I can see some driver's seat outside bolster wear & crazing on the rear reflector. Top looks new, every thing is supposed to work. I'm getting ready to pay for a PPI. It that checks out, I'll make an offer based on what the PPI finds. Seller is asking $19.9k & is willing to move some. Seller is an auto wholesaler, not a private party. So I don't have a maintenence history on the car. Carfax is clean, car spent its life in Texas until 9/04 (51k mi) then moved to So Cal. We've agreed to discuss cost after the PPI.

Knowing it's a buyer's market right now. what do you guys think the car is worth? I know the belly pan is not installed, so that's a good thing. Assuming the PPI finds only minor issues, I figured I would bundle up the minor issues into a "cost to make it right" discussion and offer 17 or 17.5k.

The car is in So Cal & I live in Colorado, so I have transportation to deal with (not that the seller cares about that)

Any thoughts?

thanks,

Ed

I'm not an expert, but I think your idea of price is close to the market. I would even say $15k or $16k. Did you search on ebay to see actual transaction prices for completed auctions for similar? I got the impression the '93 and '94 are more valuable, but again am not an expert. Lack of receipts is not good, either. I figure they are worth $1k to some.

I would also say you are better buying it with a known issue like crazing than having a dealer do a 1/2 assed job of trying to fix it. You can have it fixed properly.

A thorough PPI should tell the tale.

There is a running cost/price chart on the top of the 964 page at Reenlist...do a quick search.
I would recommend taking a flight to SoCal with a round trip ticket even if the PPI checks out. I bought out of state and used the round trip ticket once before I settled on a car...it was worth the price since I got the car I wanted with no remorse.
Good luck, Ed

Do not buy without seeing, driving and inspecting the car in person. Period. CO to CA is nothing, compared to the grief you'll be in if the car does not check out on arrival.

Thanks for the inputs.

I'll check Rennlist for cost/price data.

I definitely plan to fly to check out the car. That's the best way to deal with cost negotiations as well. I can get airfare for about $89 each way into Burbank. I flew to Salt Lake City two weeks ago to check out a 964 & supervise the PPI. Ther car was nice, buy not as immaculate as the owner described. The PPI revealed oil leak issues that should not have been present for a rebuild under 8k miles. Owner was still very proud of his car & no deal.

This time I'm doing the PPI first & then fly to the car if it passes the PPI.

thanks again for the suggestions,

Ed

Where is the car located? Maybe someone off the board can coarsely check it out for you before you fly out. I have had good luck with that.

George,

We are on the same page. The car is near Pasadena. I've been exchanging PMs with 'Dan in Pasadena' for a PPI refferal & possible drive by to check out the vehicle. I asked the seller to do a detailed walk-down of the car & provide me a defect list. When I get the list of disclosed defects I will forward that to Dan in Pasedena & the PPI mechanic I have lined up.

thanks,

Ed

Great! I am in that area during the work week as well, but I am glad Dan has volunteered, as I am pretty busy. Good luck!

I'm in the same boat as I'm looking at a 92 cab. The car was sitting for the past 3 years ans it appears there are some leaks. I'll have a PPI done by a friend's shop, but there are some problems. AC is converted and blows cold, but center vents blow hot. There is a crack in the surround of the rear spoiler, spoiler will not go up manually (not sure if it the the knob or something else) and the linen interior needs lots of cleaning? Car is a tiptronic with 80k asking $19.5k.

That's too much money for a project and a tiptronic, Bryan. Car is over 15 years old now too. Lower miles is not everything. I would move on. You want a car that's been kept up reasonably. There will be enough things to fix along the way.

Update to my search for a nice 964. The seller of the 92 964 became unresponsive, as soon as I lined up a shop to do a PPI. So I backed away from that car. I broadened my search to look at 993 model years. Decided to look for 96 or later (to get a varioram). Long story short, I bought a 96 993 cab. I will post another thread for the purchace.

Thanks George, I figured it was way high. I looked at the car a month ago and the guy called me back last night after posting many ads. No one really wants a tip and I guess the seller found that out real fast.
