Carrera Cup USA replica

So I got it in my brain to consider doing a replica/conversion of these incredible cars sometime in the future. I am ruling out buying one since there were only 45 made and worth 100K+. So, I have an idea of what I need to do but don't know the costs involved.

Initially I think it might be a good idea to buy a cheap '89 C4 and part out the AWD system. From there it's down to the shell for welds. Then suspension, engine work etc..

Cost prohibitive than buying a real one? If I can even find one for sale.

You'd be be a lot better off starting w/ a C2. Yes, strip, weld seams, weld in a cage, weld up the sunroof, install RS brakes & suspension, strip & install RS interior. Install g50/10.

Probably going to be a better idea to use a 1991 or later C2. It's not just a disconnect driveshaft and go conversion on a C4. Transmission needs to be changed, different bracket for shift linkage needs to be welded into tunnel. different abs brain and harness, etc. More of a pain to do unless you really have to. Plus, you have a wider selection of post 91 rear suspension than the earlier years. And that is not taking into account production changes(intakes, head gaskets, brakes) that can make your life easier. Sounds like a great project, something that I would love to do in the future. If you can, take a look at some back issues of Panorama. There was an article about how to convert a C4 to C2 not to long ago. I don't really agree with how they did some of it, but it was an interesting read. Do some searches here and rennlist, this topic has been discussed, and the general consensus has been to get a C2. But good luck in whatever direction you choose, it's a slippery slope no matter what direction you go in.

Thanks for the offer Phil, but this project is quite a ways down the line. The wife gets a Lotus Elise first

Transmission

Not sure what I'm going to do...but most likely it will turn into a science project. I've always wanted to take one apart to see what's inside...and as I'm not very good at putting things back together this is a likely candidate ;-)
