Is it a fan belt squeak?

That little bugger can be rehabilitated. I think some JB weld and a new bushing did it. Beats $60.

To be safe, check the fan for wobble - loosen the belts and see if you can wiggle it. It could be the fan hub.

Replace it. Search for part #964 106 051 30. The fan bolts to that hub/bearing. It is probably very tight, but with a pulley tool, sledge hammer, wood block and a few nickels (to protect the 12-point hole on the alternator shaft), you can separate them.

There is a 993 DIY on fan/alteranator removal webpage - http://p-car.com/diy/alternator/alternator.html that gives some good info on how to get most of the way there.
