New tires...
Quick question,
I have the 18" factory Turbo Twist wheels on a 1996 993. Can anyone recommend a good tire besides the Pirelli P-Zeros, or is it better to stay with that? Thank you, in advance.

There are lots of good choices, each has it's merits relative to others
Pirelli, Michelin, Bridgestone etal all have an appropriate tire

You might want to let people know what kind of driving you do and what you expect from a tyre. They all have pluses and minuses. My Goodyear Eagles give more miles but less traction (harder rubber). For me, they work well, for most others here they are inadequate.

I currently have street Pirelli, Conti, Michelin all good, Pirelli was the pleasant surprise of the bunch but I have no big issues w/ any of them. I like the Michelins(PS2) but they are too expensive, would buy Michilin Pilot Sports if I could get them to import the size I want, Goodyear has a good rep too.
BS RE050s were good but wore fast as have all the BS tires I have ever used, this is not bad, just gets expensive buying new tires every 8000 mi For track/street combo Toyos are good as are Kumhos(less good but at a lower price)

I have the Bilstein shocks with the Eibach suspension, so I wouldn't mind something that softens the ride a little. These L.A. streets can be brutal, and my wife refuses to go in the car anymore .
she just thinks its too rough a ride. and I'm beginning to agree with her.

If you are after a quieter/cushier ride, the Contiintal Sport Contact 2 lean in that direction
also haven't used them but have heard the same about Avon M500

FWIW, I have SO-2's on my '96 993 and plan on trying the Avons next time around. Alternatively, I have RE750's on my SC and previously on a '04 Audi S4 and love them. I think either will be fine.

I drive about 30K a year in my 95 and just went to Kumho Ecsta MXs. I think I've gone about 2K miles on them now. Nothing bad to report - they're not noisy and feel reasonably soft. Obviously I don't know how poorly they wear yet, but they are UTQG 220s which I think is the same as the S-03s.
This was wierd - I'm kind of agressive behind the wheel; the tires were about as grippy as a Nissan Sentra in the rain for about 100 miles, then they felt just fine. But the good news, they are CHEAP - about $130 for a 255-40/17. I did have the Contis that Bill mentioned, and they were reasonably soft too. I thought they felt a little greasy, but they are UTQG 320s (pretty sure). |

I bought the Dunlop Direzza DZ101. So far they seem to be fine, I was going with the Pirrelli P-Zero but I wanted something that wasn't as bone-jarring.
So far they seem to be fine. Anybody else have them?

I just got the DZ101s for the SC. It's a great way to turn a 911 into a Buick with a set of tires. They're going back tomorrow.

I've put Continental Conti Sport 2 on my 964 for the reason of ride and road noise for the very reasons that your wife is suggesting. Couldn't be happier with them.
They are soft so will wear quicker but seem really grippy and much quieter. |

Here's a good review of many of the top tires:

I just posted a question about mileage possible from Michelin PS2s. In this thread I only saw one mention of how far some of your tires went before replacement, and that was 8000 miles.
What kind of mileage have you guys gotten from which tires, along with a mention of the driving you do: easy, moderate of hard? Paul

I'd stick with an N spec. Porsche knows what should be on their cars, and they are different than the same tire without the spec. Check Tire Rack
