1990 964 with two dash lights on cant figure out what to do?

Hey guys I just bought my first Porsche and guess what it didnt come with a manual LOL, So as you can guess I am figuring it out as I go HAHA. But my question is that not every time I start up the car but sometimes happens on start up too the what looks like the AWD light and Brake Light come on always together sometimes it takes a while for these lights to come on but they in fact always come on? What do they mean and what do I have to look at to determine the problem. The Brakes on the car are in good shape so I dont think its the pads. Thanks Clueless in Boston

The system is building up pressure, it's normal. Should go out in less than half a minute or so.

Sounds like you need access to a Bosch Hammer to read the codes.

I've also heard that ignition system issues (disty cap, wires, etc.) can cause electrical noise that affects the computer.

Adrian Streather's book on the 964 would be useful as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if you had low fluid or a dirty lateral or transverse sensor. Those cost about $2500 these days. A dealer with a Hammer will try to sell you a new one, I have cleaned/recentered mine.

I don't think it'll be bad ignition system unless other UFO-type blips happen with other warning lights. Those sparks tend to through off more than just the ABS. A rough test is to put your stereo on an AM station and see if there is a buzz that keeps up with the tach.

If you really want to understand what is going on inside the electrical system, first step should be to scan for fault codes. If you do not have access to a Bosch Hammer, I found the DURAMETRIC software very helpful. It is not as complete as a Hammer but a fraction of the price. You can find them here:

This is exactly what it is. either the lateral or longitudinal transverse sensor. They run about $1500.00 each. Most guys on the rennlist forum have a DIY tutorial on cleaning them, getting the computer reset and you are usually good to go.

I had the same thing happen to me on my old C4.
