To really take care of the 964+ cars, you need the PST2. You can trigger individual injectors, read sensors directly, reset ABS and Airbag lights, etc.
The Durametric tool has a good reputation. They make a pro version that is not limited to a set number of VIN's. Look carefully at the difference in what you can monitor and control and note that the factory guide will correlate with the PST2.

The other thread reminded me you'll need at least the Hammer, or the PST2 to bleed cars with ABD.

The hammer is fine for everything including the 993. It can bleed the ABD and actuate indidual injectors and other functions, read all sensors, etc.
Starting with the 996 you need the Porsche PST2 to be able to write to the EEPROM memory of control units besides all the testing and scanning. The PST2 covers everything (996, 986, Cayene) up to about '05 or '06 give or take, not quite sure. For the 997 and the Cayman you need PIWIS. From what some say the newer Porsche scanners lost some of the functionality for the older cars. Don't know if that is true though. When looking for more economic aftermarket solutions the Durametric seems to get good kudos. They seem to be pretty active developing new features and their SW upgrades come free of charge. You only pay once. But I have never used one. Then there is the very cheap home-built scantool solution. You can built your own level converter and use a free piece of software. It reads 993 and 964 DME's and does some of what the hammer does. It is more of a hobby tool. Cheers, Ingo

I agree w/ everything Ingo has said.
I have a Hammer which does everthing I need on my '95, I also have the Scantool( 2 versions: DIY which i never got to do and the one put together by Riccardo) which does much of what a Hammer will do. Most of the other guys around here use the Durometric and are pleased but they still aren't quit as functional as a Hammer, biggest issue for non-Hammer is bleeding the abd circuits
