Need a new window switch
My window switch is bad. I'm looking at pelican parts and they have two different models. One OEM made by Kostal for ~$46 and the other is an APA for about $15. Is the OEM worth three times the cost?
Thanks! |

Wow, you used to be able to get the OEM for about $15... For $15, I've never tried the aftermarket. Try eBay, sometimes you can find window switches there.

I ended up pulling the trigger on the APA. I'll post feedback when I get it. From the picture it looks like the metal tension "springs" that keep the OEM switch in the socket are made of plastic on the APAs. I took the old switch apart and it certainly isn't too complicated. I jury rigged it to work until the new switch arrives.

Since the factory switches fail so regularly, I wonder if the aftermaket might even be better. Let us know.

I have owned my 993 for a little over a year and have replaced 3 of these switches. One was a new factory switch (lasted about 4 months) and two were aftermarket . I have been keeping a aftermarket one handy for when the next one to go out. I took one apart and found two ball bearing inside.... maybe a bit over-engineered?

My switches have failed so much I'm at a point now where I can remove & install them in my sleep. I've paid the high factory prices and have gotten them off e-Bay. I see no difference. Buy the cheap ones and carry a spare.

I have no idea if they are similar to the ones on my BMW, but rather than spend the $40 on new switches, I painted the contacts with conductive paint from a hobby store.

Now in 993 land ...

Cheap one on mine failed within a couple of months. Expensive one is still is going after a year. (Pass. side window operated from driver's seat). Quality difference looking at them was not obvious. They both seem cheaper made than the factory original.
