How To Replace The Engine Temerature Sensor?
Hello,
here i come with a pretty know problem on 964 and 993, the temperature sensor screwed down the engine into the cylinder head of the third cylinder, sometime needs replacement. The Temperature sensor 2 informs the control unit of the engine temperature. It provides additional fuel in the cold starting. and warmup stages of engine operation. A faulty heat sensor results bad idle, difficult start, etc... Well, that sensor replacement seems a pretty straight forward task. don't be fooled by that. The sensor is located under the rear left side of the engine on the third cylinder. You need to have access to remove a connecting hose and then the heating tube. It holds with hose clamps. You need a special long open socket, like the ones for brakes. If it's pretty easy to remove it, then it's a world of pain to install the new. I spent the first time several hours maybe 3 or 4 to install the new. The axe orientation is really tricky and a proheminent cover screwed in the camshaft housing makes the operation almost impossible. I don't know if this cover 993 105 117 02 can be safely removed during the replacement, and if it won't let the oil go. Without this cover, it should be pretty easy. So guys, if you have any trick or experience in this painfull job, please let me know. I'd really like to know if this camshaft cover can be removed without making a mess. cheers |

well...not many volunteers...
actually the cover i talked about on the camshaft housing can be removed. I checked on the PET6 and appears that you can pull it out. It's just a dumb cover. I have now to make sure that there is enough space to remove it, as it's pretty tight around. There is a gasket to replace after that, but it's better than spending an all day trying to screw the sensor in. i'll keep you posted cheers |

Try putting some PB Blaster (or euro equivalent) on the sensor to help with removal. It's saved me many times.

not much oil should come out if you remove part 8. the level is definately not that high in stopped motor, plus you probably have that side jacked up.

yeah thanks for the reflection.
actually i checked on the PET6 as well, and i noticed that the oil is much below. now i will check if i have enough space to pull it out. There is only a very tight space. cheers |

Hey guys - can you confirm that part #8 can be removed and reinstalled without any problems? Is it as simple as removing the 3 bolts and pulling? I want to replace the engine tins on my '95 engine and need to remove part #8 to do so. Thanks for the help! |
