One could also use a hole saw and make it look a bit better? Ideally I'd give it to a buddy with a CNC and have it drilled with the exact pattern the factory piece has!

There are lots of things you can do, CNC is not something that I would bother w/

I can't really say that I notice a difference between either of the above versions or the third unmodified normal version other than a little more noise from the holey versions

Mine has been modified with a saw. Clean job though. The noise is music!

I did mine with a $11 Harbor Freight hole saw kit.

I have one of these in Carbon Fiber for my C2
Lucky for me it was on the car when I purchased it, since I don't think I would have dropped the money on one....would have made my own.
this is just a big hole, not much left but an edge to hold the filter in place!

There is another option.

The inlet tube, where the air first enters the air box (the part that’s chrome on the motorsound box), easily snaps out of the air box. This makes the opening significantly bigger and eliminates the tube that follows (you can see the end of this tube in the left hand picture of Bill’s post).

Use a small screwdriver to pry the tabs that hold this piece in. It pops in and out easily. No permanent mods necessary. Cost = $0.

When you remove this piece, you will draw slightly cooler air from the front of the engine compartment. The holes in the motorsound box draw air from further inside the engine compartment, where it is slightly warmer. This difference is worth .001 HP.

You can also remove the clutch air vent, and push it to the side. Put a small filter over this air vent so clutch dust doesn’t spread all over the engine compartment. Removing this vent opens up another big hole in the air box cover.

I just finished drilling my air box cover. First off, I didn't expect any benefit from this at all, but I must say the engine has a noticeable growl now. I really like it. Definitely one of those no brainer, no cost, worthwhile upgrades! I don't have any pictures, but I drilled it similar to the motor sound cover, just with slightly bigger holes.
