best year for 993 engine???

What are the most trouble free 993 engine years? And how long will one of these engines go before Top end or Major Overhaul? Also how do the Standard transmissions hold up, Thanks JL

There's really no material difference in any of the model years - save the addition of Varioram in 96. Otherwise condition and care is a much better factor than a specific model year.

Top end rebuilds again is a function of use - some people are needing rebuilds very early (just like with some 3.2 motors) which is a leading contributor to the SAI issue, some people are pushing very high miles without any sign of needing a rebuild.

I will add that it appears cars from relatively warm climates (say, LA) that are driven in stop and go traffic seem to experience SAI and valve issues more frequently. I'd rather have a cool climate car, engine sound cover off, that was routinely taken to redline than a polished creampuff.

+1 on Don's comments.

My varioram has well over 100K on it. No SAI issues / no valve guide issues / no oil
consumption - knock on wood. 6-speed is great.
FWIW, I prefer the varioram and feel the SAI issue is way overblown...

The '95 993 with the M718 option has the 1994 3.6 engine. This engine does not have the air injection(pump) system on it. Needless to say, this engine has less emission plumbing. The '95 993 w/o the M718 option has the 1995 3.6engine w/ the air injection pump. Rerouting exhaust gas air might be good for the environment but not good for the engine.

M718 was the code used on the 1st ~1700 US/Cdn. 993's w/ M64.07 & .08 engines, the engine #s were 64R XXXXXX and only had to comply w/ '94 EPA regs. But they did have SAI pumps anyway.

SAI has nothing to do w/ rerouting exhaust gases. It is a secondary electric pump that blows through the heads into the exhaust port by the exhaust valve for ~ 1min on cold starts. The issue is that the SAI port gets blocked w/ carbon raising emissions during the cold start period. '95 US/Cdn cars(OBD1) do not monitor the exhaust downstream of the cat and so do not throw a CEL for this issue. '96 up US/Cdn cars are OBD2 and do monitor exhaust downstream from the Cat and do throw a CEL for this issue.

No RoW n/a 993 from '94 up has SAI, they are all OBD1. '94 RoW cars are M64.05(.06) w/ 63R(S) XXXXX engine #s

Many cars have had the SAI removed. It's easy enough to do on the OBD1 cars, much harder to accomplish on the OBD2s
