1990 C4 Clutch Noise

My 1990 Carrera 4 started making a noise when the clutch is engaged. Sound like the plates rubbing/spinning against each other and gets pretty loud. The car only has 27K. Any ideas on problem would be greatly appreciated.

You know the four wheel drive system uses a computer to keep a clutch pack running in a continuously varying state of slip. This is how the variable torque distribution to the front wheels works.

Could you be hearing this?

this is a loud scraping sound- sounds like rubbing sandpaper together. I noticed last week the car would shake a bit when letting the clutch off while reversing.
