964 Valve adjust

Hi I have one question about the valve adjust procedure on a C4 - does the power steer pump have to be removed or loosened to get the right side top valve cover off? All the procedures that i have read don't mention the pump but it appears to be majorly in-the-way......
Thanks

Just did the valve adjust on my C2 and it's the same as yours....no need to remove the pump... You have to remove a bunch of other stuff however...

Merry Happy!!!

Did you have to remove the heat shield that runs between the exhaust and the lower valve covers? How many bolts was it roughly?

Yes, it has to be removed to gain access to the intake rockers. Just a couple of M6 bolts. (10mm socket)

Did you take off the cat and the primary muffler too?

Despite the fact that you have to dissasemble 1/2 of the car, this job isn't really all that difficult. I'd say it takes ~3 hours to do start to finish whereas on my 77, I can do it in less than one hour.

I am not finished but I not have all 4 valve covers off and will finish up when I get home from work tomorrow. I answered my own question, the muffler and cat do have to come off.

you really don't have to remove the right side sheet metal to do the intake valve adjust.

I'm doing my 90' C2 valve adjustment now, so I thought I'd share some photos:

As you can see, the power steering pump does make access to some of the valves on the upper right a little difficult:

So far the most difficulty I've had has been removing the top right cover, but as you can see here, there are only 6 nuts to remove, and none are directly under the steering pump:

The issue I had was one washer towards the back that was a real pain to get off. Without all the washers off, you can't remove the cover. The washer is made of a soft aluminum I believe, and tends to mate with the bolt as the nut is tightened. I tried a lot of things to get this one loose, but in the end it came off with the help of a small screw driver which I dug into the side of the washer to turn and loosen:

Time and patience finally paid off.

I took off my rear bumper which made it really easy to do the valves all from under the car.

Did mine last year 91 C4 Cab, not too difficut actually but a lot of stuff to take loose. Didn't need to remove bumper or Power Steering pump, just all of exhaust.
