993 excessive rear tire wear

Hi Guys,

I have joined the group. I owned a 98 993 C2S and I have noticed that the rear tire wears out after 3000 miles of sunday driving. I have took to a local tire shop and the alignment is correct and the tire guy mentioned that it has even tread wear across. I am just a little surprised how fast the tire wears out from weekend cruising? Is there something else I should look at? Any help is much appreicated?

Thanks,

Joe

You can't expect high perf tires to last long but 3k does seem on the short end of what may be normal.

maybe you can could give up some grip for some durability.

longevity depends on the tread compound
if I get 3000 miles on MPSC I'm happy, ~5k for the stickier street tires, but 10k or more from the more usual street tires. It all depends on the tire.

I do agree that the local Pep Boys likely hasn't a clue as to how to align these cars.

Joe,

It really depends on your tire's compound as others have pointed out. What tire are you running? And how do you drive? Are you stepping on it hard at lower speed / in lower gears?

I got almost 20k out of my last set of toyo proxes t1r rears. About half of that was interstate driving but there were quite a few canyon runs, an autocross and a track event in there too!

George,

They are Dunlop 9000 Sport with a 280 rating. Most of the drivng with my wife were going to car show, sunday brunch, and picnic. Believe me, it is not like autocross driving I do with my boxster S.

Noah,

Can you enlighten me regarding kinematic toe adjustment? I am pretty sure the Tire store didi not do any of the adjustment. I saw they just use the clamps with string wrapped around all four wheels to do the wheel alignment.

Thanks for all the help,

Joe

Joe,

Definitely something wrong or worth checking. Do you have a specialized tire / alignment shop in your area that caters to racers / weekend track drivers? You need to have the suspension looked over and possibly set up by an expert, not the average tire shop.

If you post your area, we can probably give you references on where to go.

if you truly have, "even tread wear across.", it most likely NOT an alignment issue.
post a closeup photo of your used tires?

cheers

Craig

Hi Craig,

Attached are 2 pictures of my tires. Sorry, it took this long. I was a little busy with the winter Olympics.

Thanks,

Joseph

That doesn't look like even wear to me. Which side is out on those images? The bald side or the tread side? I think you can help with alignment here ...

The bald side is the inside, George.

Joseph,

the top tire looks like it was installed against it's running direction, which can increse wear.Te bottom looks worn pretty even, but the alignment could use some adjusting. Kinematic toe is very important on these cars. We are in Vancouver and can help you with this issue. Feel free to call me and discuss this issue.

Actually the both pictures are taken from the same tire, I just change the position when I was taken the picture. I will give you a call on Monday, Bernie.

Thanks,

Joseph

If the more worn side is on the inside that is normal for a car w/ a track alignment w/ more than usual camber dialed in that isn't tracked or driven particularly hard.

If the car was really driven hard the outer edge would be more worn, even w/ a track alignment

Joe,
Is your car lowered? If so it's often hard to get the rear camber set right. If the shop that did the work is not familiar with 993's they likely did not. I think you would do well to find a shop that is familiar with your car. 993 RS/996 GT3 eccentrics can be used to get less camber which is what you need. Find a good shop

as others have said, find a shop that knows these cars AND has a kinematic toe guage.

3K miles is not right...
I'll bet you have a lot rubber residue on the rear bumper cover... \

Nice looking car! Arena Red is awesome

Finally, after all these posts, we get to see your car.
very nice.

i think your tire wear is caused by the black wheels..................

LOL
as others have said, a good alignment will be your friend, you might get 7500 miles out of a good set of rear tires then!

best

Craig

Thanks Craig. I hope it is not caused by the black wheels LOL!! While I was looking for a set of rear tires. I found a good deal on

these wheels with tires. I just put them on and I will get the alignment adjusted before going out again.
