valve tap in a 1995 motor

Stock except for the smog stuff removed 1995 993 motor in a track car. After wintering over (oil replaced before wintering over) there is a valve chatter on start up even after cranking for pressure and there is a valve tick that sounds like a single valve. Does not sound motor ending harsh but there is a notable tick.

Anything other than bad lifter to think of?

Garage
It's common for 993 using 15w50 to tap a little on a cold start after a longish layover.

If it continues after the oil has warmed I'd suspect a lifter seal that has gone south. Only cure is r&r

Thanks bill. I plan to start it find the one most likely to be tapping and then see if it goes away in a few min of idling. If it takes a while or does not refill I will change it out.

If it is the lifter seal (which I suspect) please be sure to do all of them at the same time. If one is going/gone, the rest are soon to follow.

Do a search on a top end re-build. Refresh the baby and keep going another 100K plus!

Got 6 on the way. Will replace the bottom 6 first as it is one of the exhaust that is tapping. If the seals are looking bad I will pull and inspect one of the intakes to see if they are in the same condition. thanks for the info!
