Help with clutch bleed please !

I have put in new clutch lever. Master and slave cylinder with line. I have bled the clutch at the slave too many times to count. STILL have a stiff clutch ? I followed instructions from P-car ? I'm stumped. Any help is apreciated greatly. Thanks. John

Clutch line comes off the reservoir higher than the brake line, so make sure that the level is topped up and the car is level. I tried a bleed with only the ass end up and pushed air into my lines immediately. I pump up my motive bleeder to about 10 psig (I would hate to go higher and have the reservoir split and barf paint-ruining fluid all over the place). You have pinched off the vent line, but removed the vent pinch when testing? Clear fluid coming out at the slave? Pedal cluster mechanics working as they should? Clutch is stiff in this car.

I guess that's where I'm messing up. Front was on the ground. Back was up. Would it help to have the front a bit higher than back ? I read that a guy needed 18psi on his bleeder to get the air out. I did that. It didn't help. Hopeing I didn't mess something up going that high. Unfortunately I had some super blue bf that got on my fender last night and saw it this morning. Felt like a total idiot. Thanks for clueing me in. Going to garage to try again.

tried jacking car up while bleeding 3 times. still stiff. I had someone work the clutch while bleeding with power bleeder and got a bunch of air thru my slave. Is this air from the system or am I just putting air in the system ? PLEASE HELP ! been on this for 2 days. gettin desperate.

The clutch pedal is stiff on these cars, unlike most folks on here I am not a fan of the motive bleeder, I use a vacuum bleeder coupled with one way bleeder valves, Just did the clutch master cylinder replacement and it took over 14 oz of brake fluid before the line was purged of air.

In between using the vacuum bleeder I would push the clutch pedal a few times to help the air get out of the master cylinder. You say you have a hard pedal...that is good..is your clutch engaging and disengaging normally..

What brand Master/Slave are you using? Also have you checked to see that the rod from the slave cylinder is in the "cup" of the fork..remove the rectangular rubber plug on the tranny housing and make sure thats where it is (it also helps to put a dap of thick grease on end of the slave cylinder rod..

I got FTE cylinders from our host. Rectangular plug on trans ? I should know where but unable to find it. Clutch will only press 3" then like hitting a rock ? Is the rectangular plug where I can see it from under ?

Wes

back off the bleeder and reset the slave piston rod to where it belongs (in the little cup on the shift fork)

bleed the system (again) and you should be good to go...probably didnt hurt anything but only way to find out it to install it the way it should be and try it out

!

Wes. Thank you so much for your help. Unfortunately the washer that keeps everything in was pulled out to. Tried getting it all back together but no luck. Just ordered another slave from our host. Tried finding the rectangle cap that I don't have. No find on pelican. Cars just gotta sit for a few days now. Thanks for helping me again Wes. John

When I went to replace the slave and softline on my car I noticed it wasn't running that plug either, so I ordered it and installed it.

Get the plug and install it once you're sure the new slave cylinder is installed properly (i.e. the piston is properly engaging the clutch fork).

In the long-term, it's not good to run w/o the cover since debris can get in the bellhousing, but not running the cover will not directly cause problems with the operation of the clutch. It's just a cover.

Oh, and put a bit of grease on the end of the slave to keep it quiet when actuating the clutch.
