Stuck tachometer-1990 C2 964
In trying to start the car this morning, the tach stuck at about 1100 rpm. Even though the engine was idling at various rpms (which it does until warm) the tach remained at 1100. If I gave it some gas the tach would jump to 1300 then return to 1100. When I shut off the ignition, the tach stayed at 1100. Once I turned the ignition back on, the tach reset to zero. I am also experiencing hard starting in the morning - the car will start then die on the first try. It will start on the second try. I suspect this second condition is related to the fuel press regulator. However, now that the tach is acting this way, could this be a problem with the fuel/DME relay? Are the two connected? If they are not connected, what areas do I look at to determine why the tach is acting this way?
Thanks for any help. Steve

You may have two different problems that are unrelated.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure if the two problems were related since both appeared to happen at about the same time.
Now I need to trace the fault for my cold starting. I am going to look at the DME relay (I have a spare to install) and the FPR. Any other suggestions? Steve

Location of the FPR on a 964
My fuel pressure regulator is faulty and must be replaced on my 1990 C2. I cannot find any threads both here and Rennlist that tell how to replace the FPR. Can someone tell me where it is located on the engine? And if there are any tech threads that tell how to replace it, please list them.
Thanks, Steve

I guess you've checked the ISV? It's pretty easy to clean and judging by how my ISV was sticking with minimal contamination, I think it wouldn't hurt to clean.
Test with a standard 9v battery to make sure it really is clean & operating ok. |

FPR replacement
I will check the ISV also. Both could be bad, but the FPR is definitely bad. I believe the ISV is located above the alternator in the middle of the engine. Correct?
Thanks for the heads on this one. Steve

You might get some better technical replies on the rennlist forums, than just my replies here!
I had some intermittent starting problems and it turned out to be some dodgy solder joints on my DME unit. I just pulled out the unit, dropped it off with an old TV repair guy, he checked it over for $30 and all is good. There are probably plenty of other potential causes ... probably better off searching here and rennlist. |
