964 a/c freon sight glass
The service manual refers to the sight glass in the a/c system, but I cannot locate it on my car - 1990 C2. I have followed the a/c hoses from the compressor to the firewall where they then travel to the front compartment. I have removed the valance in the front compartment next to the front firewall but could not locate the glass. If it is hidden behind other things, please tell me how to reach it.
Regards, Steve

The sight glass is usually on top of the receiver/drier which is under the front driver side fender liner. The drier is in the part nearest the door.

a/c
Nickd,
To get to the sight glass, it appears that I must remove the driver side (U.S. model) inner fender well cover. If this is the case, it seems Porsche did not intend for this to be used as part of the a/c diagnostic procedure. So, why is there a sight glass in the system, if this is correct? I realize that gauges are the most accurate way to add freon to the system. However, you can watch the sight glass for bubbles and then fill the system until the bubbles are removed. Not a precise way to top a system, but it will work. Any other suggestions, other than purchase a set of gauges? Steve

RetiredRider, in situations where I am away from my garage and I have to add refrigerant to a system that is marginally cooling, but still has some charge left in the system (therefore no need to vacuum), I watch the suction line going back to the compressor until it sweats a little. You have to charge slowly with the can upright. Blower on full blast and thermostat on the coldest setting and system has been running for about 5-10 minutes until the air coming out of the vents are cool. It is dangerous to overcharge the system as liquid refrigerant will slug the compressor and kill it.
Good luck.

Was just working on mine last night - that is indeed where the sight glass is. And you can't even see it, even with the fender liners off, without using a dental mirror.
You can borrow manifold gauges at Autozone. Very easy to connect and see what the pressures actually are. The AC isn't extraordinary to begin with and needs all the help it can get.

Smartest way to charge the system is by P&T (pressures and temperatures).
