New Guy from San Diego

New from San Diego California. I'm apart of the 4runner forum, so not new to forums.

Have a 1990 Porsche Cab Carrera 2. I put a ducktail on it, and the iconic Carrera lettering on the side of it with some black Boxter wheels. (Hence the name 1973Porsche964)

I'm also an amateur photographer, so if you have been at an Autocross in Qualcomm stadium, I probably have a photo of you.

Here's my first question, Is there any way to check the engine oil level accurately? I changed to synthetic a couple hours ago. I decided to measure the amount of oil that came out, and replace it with the same amount, However, long story short, oil was all over my driveway haha. So I put in 9 quarts. I need to check the oil level accurately so I can take some out or add more.

Here's a picture

Good looking car. Congrats!

I had the same experience the first oil change. The car drains oil faster than most drain pans can accommodate.

I think the dipstick once the car is fully warmed up and running is the most accurate. Someone, correct me if I'm wrong.

As the weather has gotten colder, I've noticed by oil level gauge doesn't even register a reading most of the time. Not sure if it is malfunctioning.

Generally, it is recommended that you initially refill with 6.5 - 7 quarts of oil, start the car, let the oil warm up and then add oil 1/2 quart at the time until you get the proper level.

Here's a good DIY:

Both Vandit and TMc993 are correct in my experience. Because the car has a remote sump for the oil you have to run a bit of oil before it can take more (I usually add 4-5 quarts first). 9 quarts sounds about right...the car has somewhere just north of 11 quarts total, but with all the lines and the oil cooler way up front, it holds onto a couple of quarts each time, so you never really change 100% each time.

Also I agree about the dash oil level guage, it seems to work best right after a fresh change, and declines in reliability as oil ages and during really cold starts (on my car at least)...

dont forget that to check the oil level, the oil temp needs to be hot.
going for a drive does NOT get the oil sufficiently hot to check the level (unless on the track).
suggest you go for a drive which will warm it up 50%, then let it idle for 15mins to get it hot.
maybe get a book to read whilst waiting.
