Brake Noise

Installed rebuilt calipers, new rotors, new pads (mintex) and bled the entire system. There seems to be a metal on metal sound like it sounds when there is material left on your brakes (remember the old college days).

Is this normal? Maybe not bled enough? Any thoughts?

Everything is tight and in the right place.

Did you bed the pads in? Are they the same type of pads you had before? Some pads will sqeual more than others. I take it the sound is only when applying the brakes?

Is it squealing noise or metal on metal rubbing when you step on the brakes? is it possible for the pads to be reversed so that the metal side is against the rotor surface? I know I did this once on a BMW but not on my 964, and my brain is deteriorating I guess.

The pads look the same and slide into the calipers nice. The noise is metal rubbing not squealing. Noise is only there when applying brakes.

What is bed the pads, I didn't do this whatever it is.

The noise is like a scrapping metal noise.

Is it possible that air in the system could cause such things. All the calipers were out for rebuild. I thought maybe a little air in one side could cause one side to contact the rotor more than the other and cause a strange outcome.

New Pad Bedding/Break-In

If it is not squealing then I can't think of what metal would rub only when the brakes are depressed. Could one of the pad springs or clipy things be pointing in such a way that they move with the pad and contact the rotor? Are the metal anti-squeal plates (thin plates) in their proper place?

I would remove the pads and inspect the calipers again thoroughly. Make sure there is nothing but piston that's in the path of travel. Sometimes small things get lodged in the caliper during reassembly. Ask me how I know.

Got the car home last night and thought I would check on Bazar01 comment "one or more of the pads being backwards". The right rear had the inside pad so that the metal back was contacting the rotor instead of the pad side. I thought I was pretty carefull when I did this but I guess I missed.

I hope the rotor isn't toast. Will check it this weekend. Thanks for the feed back guys.
