PPI on 92 C4 tips? What to lookout for?
Hey guys,
I have a 964 PPI on Wed morning and could use some help. After 3 months of searching (between 3.2s & 964s), I 'm finally moving forward on a 100K mile '92 C4 Coupe, seemingly well maintained by Pcar specialists. Link to car is below--don't worry, I'm not paying $25k. Besides compression and leakdown, anything else I should be on the lookout for? Anything specific with AWD system? Anything else?? ANY help/guidance/tips very much appreciated. If the car passes, I am flying to buy her and drive her home this week (!). 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 4, $24,900 - Cars.com PS If I buy her, I will certainly be back here to chance some aesthetic/stance issues I have with current set-up. Thanks! Last edited by 9one1; 07-17-2012 at 07:09 PM.. |

I bought a '90 C4 with 145,000 mi on the clock last year. The PPI was very helpful and found a few "fix before driving home" issues and a couple of "know about this and fix it when you have time" issues. It also missed a couple items.
A couple of the CV boots were shredded and needed to be replaced before it was a good idea to drive the car home, especially through the mountains in April where I did in fact encounter a couple blizzards. The front differential pinion seal leaks. Still does - I have everything to fix it but time. The key has been to keep the fluid topped up more often than the maintenance schedule. The steering rack leaks. Still does - again, everything on hand but time. The key has been to keep steering fluid on hand and check the reservoir regularly. The sunroof does not close all the way. It closes completely but needs help with the rear edge making the final pop up into position flush with the roof. They missed that in my PPI. I believe it is a broken cable on the passenger side of the car, but I have not had time to dig into it further as yet. I have a set of sunroof seals on hand to refresh those when I do get around to the closing issue. I don't have enough sunroof weather to make this a high priority item. The emergency brake does not engage until the second to last click. It needed to be adjusted. This was missed in my PPI. The adjustment, if not done regularly, is hard to do without taking off the rear brake rotors because things get rusted up inside. The carpet is a little ratty, and could stand to be completely stripped out, scraped, and replaced. The back seat area especially needs some cosmetic work. When the parcel shelf is folded down, the seat hinges seem to squeak a little bit. My plan is to remove the rear seats, but for now I just keep them folded up and will deal with them when I deal with the carpet. The PPI did tell me the car was a great driver and a fair price. Neither of those has turned out to be anything short of the truth. I love my car and you will loves yours, too. |
