Start-up Problem HELP

Guys, I have a 96 993, car has always ran great, used maybe a quart every 1,500 to 2,000 miles depending on driving and temperature (I think thats OK).

Recently when I proceed to start my car it will start at a high RPM (say 1,500) and slowly adjust down to the normal idle RPM. Normally it just fires up and runs at the correct idle RPM. Something is causing the idle RPM to be increased at start-up and with that, it is smoking at start-up. Never did this before just started happening about a month ago. Must be some failed componant or pluged line. Ant one experience something similar?
