1990 964 - Need help installing a rear oil return pipe
For some unknown reason, I’m being plagued with technical problems with my 1990 964 right now. I no sooner fix one issue, than another one rears its ugly head. Last night, I traced an intermittent oil leak to an area in proximity to the rear axel and identified in the Porsche Parts Manual as an oil pipe (Part # 964-207-257-11). This rear oil return pipe is attached to the engine by a huge thin-wall aluminum nut. On close inspection, it appears that metal fatigue has cracked the nut and is allowing oil to seep out of the pipe and down onto the heat exchanger. Naturally, this situation produced an increased amount of smoke when the car was driven…a problem which escalated to the point that I have not driven the car in over a month!
Does anyone have any good ideas on how to replace the L-shaped rear oil-pipe without removing the heat exchanger? It would be nice if someone has already replaced the part and took pictures of the process going in and maybe jotted down a few field notes to boot. Well I can hope can’t I? Please let me know of any information you may have in replacing this potentially hard to reach part. ![]() Last edited by David Schmidt; 08-16-2012 at 06:59 AM.. |

Sorry, you're going to need to drop the heat exchangers. Mine has a drip here too, but nothing as bad as what you described.
