Here are a few...kerosene, Dunk for starters. Then a water based degreaser like Swish Facto AT30.

I'd seal off the engine better than that.

Thanks for the suggestions Alex. What is Dunk for starters? How should I better seal the engine? Would you suggest a pressure wash at some point?
Thanks

Its a oil based degreaser which is used to get the majority of crud off engines, transmissions or engine bays. These kind of products come in a spray or container. I prefer the latter. Use a 1" pure bristle paint brush.

Make sure nothing can get by your rags. I don't let them stick out either...they can be dislodged too easily. I prefer paper towels and I replace them often as they get dirty.

I certainly wouldn't, although I am sure some might. Looking at that engine, I'd probably be a day on it.

I do plan to pull the heads after the cleaning.
I will look for the products. I have already spent a bit of time on it already. After this it is on to the 930 gear box.
Thanks again for your time and information.

Not sure why you'd clean it before disassembling? If the heads go out for rebuild, the machine shop will clean them. Same for case and cylinders. I'd get the big chunks off with a wooden spatula and forget about it. Wear nitrile gloves.

If not all goes out to a machine shop, I'd get busy with some "gunk" engine degreaser and brushes. I'd use a large plastic bin underneath (I like the concrete mix bins) to catch the mess and also to be able to re-use the engine degreaser a couple times. Make sure to work in a well ventilated area and / or to wear a respirator.

JUst the heads will be going out and I would at least like to get the majority of the mess off first. I will be media blasting them for my machinist. The block/barrels I am afraid are all brushes and rags. Good idea about the concrete mixing tub. Wish I had a dry-ice blaster.

I used aigel's method to clean a flat-6 a number of years ago.

I prefer the one on the left as well. Do you have her contact number so I can put her to work?

Starting young I see. LOL. Reminds me of when my 4 year old stuck her hands in the oil bucket after an oil change and thought it was funny......... Her mom however did not find it funny.

Unfortunately, Facto AT30 water-based degreaser isn't available at the local Pep Boys or Advance Auto Parts. Swish has outlets in NY and VT. One P-car owner in Chicago had to order a pail.

These are the before and after results.

This one actually sat in a fresh bucket of changed oil after a oil change on my 911. What a night that was. My wife laughed her head off until it was bath time.

Thanks Alex
I (we) are fighting through it with tooth brushes, bristle brushes and lots of paper towels. it is not coming out too bad so far. Just takes time.
