993 Cruise Not Working
Hi,
I realize this is yet another cruise control question, but before anyone goes off , please understand that I have done a fairly extensive search about this topic on the forums and found some information to start the debug, but everyone seems to have different issues and I couldn't find a comprehensive list of items to check or how to start the debug process. I was hoping to get some help with the various items to check so that others who have this problem currently or in the future will have a "list" per se to go about debugging the issue. I will start by providing as much information that I think may be pertinent to the problem. Hoping you guys can help.- My 993 is a 1997 C4S. - Bought it used with 34K miles, now 34.8K on the clock. - When I bought the car, I had the clutch replaced (needed it) so I assume they had to drop the engine and have had to disconnect cables, etc. - Don't remember trying cruise control prior to the first time I tried and noticed it did not work. - Potentially related (but don't know) issue, Odometer very recently stopped working. I've read the post about the little plastic gears that deteriorate and have purchased the gears so I can replace them. - Speedo works fine - When I try to turn on Cruise Control, I do not get a light on the dash indicating Cruise is on. Based on what I have written above, could you guys help with the following: - Does the Odometer function affect functionality of cruise control - What are the likely list of items I or others with similar problems can check - Location descriptions and or pictures if possible would be great to help locate switches, connectors, etc. Thanks in advance for the help. |

Check the fuse. Check the multi-pin connector behind/below the rear blower motor. Check the brake and clutch switches on the pedal assembly. |

Thanks Traveller,
Fuse is good, the brake and clutch switches seem ok. I checked that they disengage when the clutch and brake are released. Where is the blower motor located, is it in the engine compartment or in the interior compartment somewhere? This is a difficult debug because as I understand, there isn't even a light indicator on the dash to show that cruise in on. Thanks for your response, I would have thought that due to this common problem others would have provided their experience. I appreciate the help. Thanks |

Seem...or did you actually test them with a DMM? The brake light one is easy enough.
Driver's side engine compartment, right in behind the fuel pressure regulator. Its a larger black connector if I recall...about an inch in diameter. |

I checked the brake light functionally, i.e. had my wife watch the tail light. I could hear that the switch for the clutch was not disengaging when the clutch was fully released. I pulled the clutch back with my hand and I could hear the switch "click" so I adjusted the switch.
I will recheck with my DMM to make sure. I will check the connector in the engine compartment. Thanks |

Now in 993 land ...

You will have to remove the blower bits to get to the connector in the engine compartment.
Here a picture of an earlier thread I posted. It shows the connector removed and only half a C shaped shell which holds this connector. ![]() It is part of the bulk head connections mounted on the engine bracket that can be seen in this image to the very top left. ![]() Maybe somebody can get an actual picture of the connector up here. I would disconnect, use contact cleaner spray and reconnect. G |

Also check that the actuator rod is still engaged in the throttle linkage. It can easily be verified.

Aigle, Traveller,
Thanks guys, I will check each later today. I am thinking the guys at the shop may not have reconnected the connector or linkage after they replaced my clutch. But its difficult to confirm l because I don't remember ever trying the cruise control before I had the clutch done. Thanks |
