993 door handle cap

Are these just a press fit?
Looks like the PO tried, unsuccessfully, to scratch them out with a screwdriver. There is no lock cylinder.

The plugs push into the key slots in the lock cylinders on my '97 993. There are lock cylinders in both doors and my ignition key will unlock the doors, albeit it setting off the alarm in the process.

Yes, they are just pushed into the lock mechanism...
As mentioned above, they are plugs as inserted by the factory, into lock mechanism. Car is supposed to be opened with the key fob only. Plugs pull right out, and is done so when programming a key fob. The sequence can be located in the owners manual.

Unlock, lock, unlock, begins the sequence of programming a remote.

I think you should have that anal retentive issue you're wrestling with, examined.

That is too funny. It's the first time I've ever been accused. Thank you so much. I just thought if they were easy, well...

Im glad you took my comment for its intended purpose :-)

I suppose you could try to source a door handle in the same color, and swap out the lock mechanism. Or, disassemble the handle till you get to the piece you want rechromed, but is it really worth the time and energy? If not, please refer to previous post...

Do ya think the scratches are because someone tried to break in to the car by attempting to pry off the cap?

No I dont, but then again I dont have that crystal ball. Any amount of supposition at this point is just that; supposition.

The little plastic cap pulls right out. I can hook a fingernail on each side of mine and pull it right out. Its not meant for any type of protection other than to let you know that the proper way to open the door and deactivate the drive block system is with the fob.

As stated previously, maybe someone was programming a remote key fob and got stupidly hamfisted with a jewelers screwdriver??? Who knows at this juncture...
